The respiratory syncytial virus was discovered in 1956. Highly contagious, it mainly affects young children. However, it can also affect older people. It is most prevalent in winter, and its initial symptoms are similar to those of the common cold. Vaccination provides the most effective protection against this virus. At Clinique Santé Voyage, we offer Arexvy, the RSV vaccine.
What is RSV?
RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, is a virus that generally affects the respiratory tract. It can cause symptoms such as fever, cough and nasal congestion. Wheezing and otitis may also be observed in young children. RSV can cause serious complications, including lung infections.
The risk of complications is also higher in individuals with chronic diseases, including the following:
- Asthma;
- Cystic fibrosis;
- Immune deficiency;
- Neuromuscular disorders;
- Certain congenital pathologies.
Complications can be serious without prompt hospital treatment.
How is RSV transmitted?
Like influenza, RSV is transmitted primarily by air. It is carried by secretions released by infected people when they cough or sneeze. You can also contract the virus by touching an infected object, then bringing your hand to your mouth. ,
It should be noted that the virus survives for around 30 minutes on skin and several hours on tissues and objects. We note, however, that RSV is highly sensitive, especially to disinfectants. Regular hand washing is therefore strongly recommended to protect yourself.
How is RSV treated?
Treatment of RSV is symptomatic. The doctor may, for example, prescribe antipyretics and analgesics, depending on the case. Regular nasal cleansing is also essential to reduce the risk of infection.
In the event of respiratory difficulties, hospitalization is essential. Finally, it’s essential to drink plenty of water. Intravenous hydration is used in the most severe cases.
The importance of vaccination
Vaccination is one of the most effective ways of preventing RSV-related viral infections. It helps not only to protect individuals, but also to reduce the spread of the virus in the community.
Arexvy, the RSV vaccine
Arexvy is a vaccine offering effective protection against RSV, reducing the risk of serious complications. It is administered by injection and a single dose is sufficient.
As with any vaccine, some people may experience mild side effects. These may include redness at the injection site or fever. In the event of any suspicious signs, it is strongly recommended that you consult a healthcare professional to determine whether this vaccine is suitable for you.
It should be noted that Arexvy is not available in pharmacies or through public services. It is not covered by the Régie de l’Assurance maladie du Québec.
