Pneumococcal Disease

Infections caused by S. pneumoniae are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is estimated that approximately 1 million children die of pneumococcal disease each year; the majority of which are young children in developing countries. In developed countries, a large burden of disease also exists among elderly persons. Risk factors for disease include: sickle-cell anaemia, chronic conditions (such as chronic pulmonary and cardiovascular disease), and immunosuppression.
