Yellow fever is a viral disease that occurs in tropical regions of Africa and the Americas. It mainly affects humans and monkeys, and is transmitted by the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. It sometimes causes devastating epidemic outbreaks, which can be prevented and controlled by mass vaccination campaigns.<\/p>\n
The first symptoms of the disease generally appear 3 to 6 days after infection. The first or “acute” phase is characterized by fever, muscle pain, headache, chills, anorexia, nausea and vomiting. After 3 to 4 days, most patients improve and their symptoms disappear.<\/p>\n
In a few cases, however, the disease then enters a “toxic” phase: fever reappears, the patient becomes icteric and haemorrhaging may occur, with blood in vomit (“vomito negro” characteristic). Approximately half of patients in the toxic phase die within 10 to 14 days.<\/p>\n
There is no specific treatment for yellow fever. Vaccination is strongly recommended as a preventive measure for travelers to endemic countries and for the inhabitants of these countries.<\/p>\n
