Meningitis serogroup B vaccination (Bexsero ©)

Group B strains of meningococcus (meningococcus B) are the most common cause of meningococcal disease in Canada. Not to be confused with the meningococcal strains of travellers (strains A, C, W and Y).

Responsible for 80% of cases of meningococcal disease in infants under one year of age, 67% in 1-4 year olds and 62% in adolescents and young adults.
Although rare, this disease can affect healthy people quickly and without warning.

Meningococcal disease can cause death within 24 to 48 hours, and symptoms can often resemble the flu, making this disease often misdiagnosed in its early stages.

Bexsero ® and Trumemba ® vaccines are available across Canada.
